There, but by the Grace of God, go I in Newsworthy by ricky carrasco
Location: Downtown Paso del Norte Bridge
When Mom asked me to accompany her to Juarez to photograph her "amigitos", the people she gives money and food to (see "Maggie" and "Reyes"), I jumped at the chance. It would be a test to see if I could convey the stories with the dignity and faith my mom had told me. I heard many tragic, but hopeful, stories that day. All the while on the lookout for danger (soldiers and others kept seeing my Nikon with distrust). This gentleman was the last person I photographed and, unfortunately, the only one I didn't speak to. He stands under the downtown Paso del Norte bridge on the Juarez side. He calls to bridge pedestrians to throw down money. We did, whatever change we still had. Even though my family is going through a rough patch right now, I went home thankful for what I do have.

Love the spirit, the capture, the honesty, the need/desire to capture well, the faith, the genuine desire to do good and help people in need, and the generosity despite having your own limitations. It says a lot about you and your family. God Bless you and your mom! This photo shows how small we really are in the big scheme of things, and that despite being "trapped" by circumstances, we can still look up to receive help!

Update: I went with Mom again today. We ran into 2 men (not pictured here or on my jpgmag.com page for their fear of reprisal) who told us that their greatest fear is the city police who regularly insist on "their share" of money or they are jailed. Interestingly enough though, everyone, including them, are not jaded as much as you would expect. Most people are still generous, courteous, and friendly, despite their conditions.
